Description

5 Thursdays: May 9, 16, 23, 30, June 6 | 5:30 - 8:45 pm EST

The best use of pen nibs requires deep knowledge of how they work and the variables that influence their functioning. This virtual course led by renowned international artist Rogério Lupo addresses the most appropriate way to use a dip pen nib in order to get the best from it. Even experienced artists who are familiar with this tool may eventually face issues with its functioning and have to figure out how to keep the work flowing smoothly. This course teaches simple procedures to help obtain the finest lines and reveals how to preserve, cleanse, and restore the nibs. We will explore simple methods for maintaining the best flow of ink, keeping its good quality, and avoiding dehydration. The instructor will propose a series of basic exercises and a variety of botanical subjects will be addressed and demonstrated in live classes, all embodying the essentials of the visual language of hatching to represent light and shade.

This course will include drawing demonstrations of the various skills that will be discussed. Individualized feedback will be provided to each student. Only students who are enrolled in the Botanical Illustration certificate program at the Garden may register for this course. Students are encouraged to review the instructor’s free guidebook prior to the start of the course. For an example of the instructor’s rendition of scientific illustrations with the technique of pen nib and ink, watch this video.
